Making Gold - tips and recommendations

Making Gold

When you first come to Taern you are given a series of quests to work through, which do give gold rewards. Sometimes they are good, and sometimes they are not. However, quests aren't going to fuel your character's need for gold when it comes to buying new gear, repairing rares, and trading items with other players. Fortunately there are many ways to make gold in game, from those who first arrive, to those who have been playing for quite a long time. Some of the ways to make gold include:

  • gold daily quests or gold bar(starting at level 55)
  • completing tasks
  • farming mobs that drop items that can be sold easily
  • farming bosses and selling the unneeded rares
  • converting unneeded rares to essence to sell
  • labor conversion - such as selling cod, halite, or clams
  • selling platinum*

- sale of platinum might involve real money.

In Taern, hard work is rewarded. You won't get anything from waiting around begging for gold except get in trouble. If you want gold then you will have to do some work to get it, and it is a continuous process as there is always more items to spend your hard earned gold on.

Daily Gold Quests

  • Level 55 players unlock a daily task (or quest) that rewards a random amount of gold between 250k-450k, by searching for items, traveling to distant caves and tombs, and fighting mobs. It can be done every 24 hours. This task is given by Taish.
  • Level 55 players also unlock the Gold Bar task, which rewards 300k gold. This is a series of 4 tasks which have a range of difficulty where you fight mobs, find items, and travel across the map. This task has a 6 hour cool down where you cannot take any other task, so it's best to do it before you sleep or leave for work.
  • Level 110 players unlock a new daily quest, called Harpy Tears, which rewards 500k gold. It can be done every 24 hours, and if taken will block a player from doing the level 55 gold quest, or vice versa. Players must farm 5 abdomens which are dropped from Ticks, and then kill 15 harpies.

Completing Tasks

Early on, you are able to take tasks which will give you additional experience and gold. Some tasks for new players includes killing rats - which can be done on the ship before arriving on Haligard - or taken from the City Hall clerk, prior to the level 8 questline. A more notable task is the Zed Task given by the Blacksmith. Although tasks don't give large amounts of gold in one sitting, if you continue to take them whenever you can you will slowly build up additional gold.

Please look at the tasks page which shows you the list of all available tasks!

Farming Bosses and Mobs

Although you won't likely be able to farm bosses for rares until level 15 (unless you find a team), you can always farm mobs for basic items or materials to sell. These usually aren't the best items and aren't worth too much gold but you will get experience for leveling while you farm items.

Once you can farm Chieftain, and do not need, or have, the rares you want, you can start selling Chieftain rares. The trade channel on chat is just below the private message area, and you can merely state "Sell: rare name" in that chat and wait for a response! Chieftain rares aren't the most valuable, but they are a good start, if you don't want to go the essence route, which has more steps involved but ultimately earns you more gold for most of the low and mid level boss rares. If you do not know what an item is worth you can always ask for a price check in chat - but always take those responses with a grain of salt, as players are not always inclined to tell the actual going price, especially if it's an item they want.

Essence

Essence is a great route for gold-getting, but you need to be able to farm bosses to do this. Once you have dropped a rare that you are not interested in, you can head over to the blacksmith (or similar shop in other regions) and purchase an Extractor (this costs 20k gold, but don't worry, you will make it back). You then click text options from Blacksmith, Borghilde, or Beirn Shop, to 'upgrade' an item. Place the rare and the extractor in two of the fields. You can gain additional essence by placing an inhibitor of equal or higher rank than the rare. It is free to melt the rare, so you only spend 20k. From a chieftain item you will get 4 essence. The going price for essence is usually 20k gold, and is high in demand, meaning you make a 60k profit.

Higher rank rares will give higher essence amounts, which means more gold. This is one of the best ways to make gold in the early game, prior to gold tasks.

Material Conversion

One of the earliest material conversion methods is to gather cod. To do this you must have first completed Murrag's level 12 quest and unlocked the island. You go to the far end of the island (if you aren't strong enough to handle the mobs you can get help, or wait until you are), and gather cod. Occasionally you will get an 'Amber' which you can also sell. When your inventory is full, you return to Murrag and convert the cod into fillets, which you can sell for 550 gold per fillet to Emily in the Inn.

The next option is Halite, but almost no one does halite because it has been overshadowed by Clams, which has more gold gain for time, but is more dangerous. In halite, so long as you can handle the mobs, you might face the risk of being attacked by another player once every few days unless you are a PVPer. Halite can be converted to polished halite and then sold for 3900 gold each to Leila, or just sold directly to a shop for less gold, but a slightly faster route.

Lastly, you can go to Clams. Since clams is a black zone, you can be attacked by other players of all levels over and over, which will then make it difficult to actually get a haul of clams to sell if there are players camping on the map. If you are lucky enough to go at a time in which enemy players are off or just not around, you can wait until ~12 PM server time (use /time command in chat) to sell clams for 15k per 20. Make sure after collecting the clams you roast them in the fire!

Selling Platinum

This only works if you have platinum in the 'box' form. Usually you get this from purchasing platinum with money, but on rare occasions you may win from an event, or even sell items for platinum boxes. Platinum boxes usually sell for a large amount of gold per box. Currently, platinum sells from (give or take) 2 million gold per box. Some sell lower, and some higher, but this seems to be the average price. Remember: if no one buys for one price you can try to lower it a bit and see if you get someone's interest.
