Social Experience

As you make your first steps through Taern you might want to ask questions from other players, introduce yourself, or trade. To do so, we have multiple chat rooms with different purposes. To open your chat, click on the round icon in between friends list and settings in the top menu.

Chat Sections Defined

This shows the selection of chat rooms you can pick from. You will login with the topmost room (the blue globe) auto-selected. This is the main chat on our server, where all players can participate. It's important to know that this chat only allows english.

We have an option for players who speak other languages, such as the international chat, which is the second on the list. Players can speak in any language on that chat, including english.

The third chat is party or team chat. This chat allows for conversations between all party members (players in the party you are in). This also includes players not in the party but in the same instant. No one else can see what is said in this chat.

The fourth chat is private. You can send messages specifically to a single player if you know their username. You can click on the name of any player in any of the other chats to automatically select them in your private chat. No one can see what you two write, but it's important to note players can report you, or vice versa, for bad behaviour. Private chat does not exist for the purpose of being mean.

The fourth chat is trade chat. This is where you post your buying, selling, or trading messages. These must be written in english! A filter exists to prevent the same player from posting twice in 10 minutes. This is to prevent spam, and you will get in trouble for avoiding the filter.

The fifth chat is only available if you are in a guild. It's the guild chat, where all players within the guild can talk to each other. Rules and restrictions are specific to the guild's leaders.

Side chat is on the left side of the menu. It is far talking with people in your immediate (viewable) area.

Lastly, there is a combat chat in which you can speak to people both on your team and on the other team. Privately, you can use /t in combat chat if in PvP to only speak to your teammates.

Tips for Chat/Known Bugs

  • If you do not want to see the flashing icon when a new message is posted, you can disable it by clicking the green button beside all but team and private chat. When the button is red, that chat will be disabled.
  • There are rules for chat. As a general statement, please be respectful of other players and do not swear or post bad content. You can view rules by typing /reg in an empty message field.
  • Posting a < symbol in private chat may break it. If this has happened, remove the player's name you were pming and type /clear. Alternatively, refreshing will solve the problem.
  • Occasionally you may encounter a glitch where everything you type is automatically sent immediately, as if the enter key is stuck. It is not fully known what causes it, but in order to avoid getting in trouble for unintentional spam, try hitting enter repeatedly in team chat (the safest choice). If the problem persists, refresh the page.
  • If you send a private message to an online player, you will get the message: player_name is unavailable. They are offline, and will not receive any message. Try the mail system in the main toolbar instead if it is urgent.
  • If you have been ignored, or if a player has all those under a certain level ignored (a feature for premium III accounts) you will see Ignored if you try to message them.
  • If a player annoys you or if you don't want to see their messages you can block them using commands. You will still see their comments in team chat and combat chat.
  • If chat has frozen or becomes unresponsive, or if you are unable to send a message but see others talking, refresh the page.
  • Once you have put your chat in the position you want it and the size you like, type /save so it automatically retains that size and position each time you login.
