You can get these from NPCs. Usually there is a great reward for finishing them. Quests can be long, and sometimes you will need a friend's help to finish them. You can do them only once on each character, and it's important to pay attention, because you may fail some of them.

The Main Storyline
Taern has a rich and overexpanding story-line of a series of quests, all completed one after the other. The storyline unlocks access to different areas of the game that could not otherwise be reached - easily - and gives great rewards, including a pet. Keeping up to date with the storyline as its added will allow you to unlock access to Southern Alaril through the gate, Trifkin's island, which then unlocks a series of daily quests and new tasks, and finally, unlocks access to additional boss runs. Unless stated differently, each quest is a follow up of the previous main storyline quest - new quests are unlocked when the old one is completed.

Daily Quests
Daily Quests are unique quests that can only be completed every 24-hours. Some daily quests have task stages and a task cool down, but some do not. A canceled daily quest cannot be retaken for 24 hours just like a completed one. The 24 hour cool down starts from the moment the quest is taken, and not from the moment it is canceled/completed. Daily quests generally give good rewards, such as large amounts of gold, and vary in difficulty.
